Study Tips on Pharmacy Course II

Bismillah, so here are some habits that I have been practicing over the last two years when it comes to class. Stay awake at all time, seriously everyone need to have a good sleeping pattern so you would not fall asleep in class. Do not stay up late and do not sleep too much. Stay focus in class. Listen to the lecture and write at the same time – well at least write quick notes based on your understanding so it will be easier to revise at home. Put aside any cell phone, mp3, ipod, facebook and twitter when you are in class. Ask question and meet the lecturers if you have any difficulty because there is no such as stupid question anyway. Never skip class because you will never know what you missed on that day. Aim for high marks in periodical and practical exam as it will help you a lot in final examination.

Microbiology is divided into 3 parts (Gr-ve, Gr+ve, Virology). This subject is about bacteria either common or rare and some viruses attacking people all over the world. For each part, you need to be able to distinguish each m.o from another m.o, their pathogenesis, the mechanism, line of treatment and other classifications related. G+ve part is rather easy which constitute only little part. Same goes to virology, we will be learning about famous virus and so the mechanism and treatment is important to know. For G-ve part, there will be a lot classification for m.o where this part is the most confusing in microbiology and most of questions came from this part. For practical works, you must be able to recognize slides and dishes of certain m.o to differentiate each m.o by their special features or tests.

Pharmacology-1 is divided to 3 parts (mainly drug abs, drugs acting on ANS, and certain type of drugs). This subject is about “how drug react and how body respond with some example of drugs”. For part 1 nothing much –its easy and simple, basically need you to understand some factors affecting drug absorption. For part 2 (drug acting on ANS) you must need to fully understand what happened when drug acts on sympathethic / parasympathethic and when some agent blocked the receptor –so also need to know the mechanism and some drugs’ name. For part 3, you will learn about some drugs as anti-histamic, anti-hypertensive  and as usual you should know the mechanism and line of treatment with some advantages and disadvantages. As for the practical session, you will be handling frogs and how to read graphs for different type of drugs used.

Phytochemistry-2 is also divided into 3 parts (chromatography, alkaloids and glycosides). For chromatography part –basically about how to separate a mixture of compound into respectively known material. You shall learn what type of chromatography used and some mechanisms. Secondly, the alkaloids –which just like other semester you will learn about plants, their ACs, structures (important), uses and others according to their classifications. Same goes to glycosides part. According to some classifications, you need to understand the structure, active ingredient, properties, mechanisms and uses. For labs, its quite easy as it will be divided into 2 parts (simple chromatography, detection of alkaloid compound and some spot material).

Pharmacy Administration this subject is really different. You will learn  about business and how can you apply it in future if you are planning to open a pharmacy business later on. So what I can conclude for this subject is its really interesting learning about business, how you create your goal, mission and vision and how can you innovate your business apart from being different from others to stay in market. The professor also gave us an assignment for extra marks so overall it is the best subject especially for student who like business.

Biochemistry-2 is divided into several parts (digestion and absorption of protein, lipid, CHO and some important cycles in body as Kreb cycle, Urea cyle, and HMP shunt). It is not a difficult subject if you study it well. As usual, to score biochemistry you need to know the complete cycle and production from the process and how many ATP does it use. Mechanism and regulation are also important not to mention each key enzyme, factors, by-product and co-enzyme. For practical part, you need to put an extra care on how you use the apparatus to avoid any mistakes which lead to an error in your reading.

Pharmaceutical Dosage Form-2 is also divided into 3 parts (suppositories, ointment/cream, and ophthalmic). For part 1, we will study  about different type of suppositories, properties, advantages and disadvantages against each other. You also need to understand factors affecting good suppository and how can we propose an ideal suppository. For part 2, ointment and cream were also rather easy with typical informations as factors, properties, and classifications. And lastly for ophthalmic part, you also need to point out factors affecting good ophthalmic agents, properties, advantages and disadvantages. Usually, for part 1 and 3, questions for finals are quite mind-challenging and need you to think deeper while part 2 were rather straight forward. It will be the most fun practical as you willprepare suppositories, some medicinal ointment and creams.

Pathophysiology it is a light introduction for pathology (which you will take for the next semester). It contains different diseases from different parts of the body; for example inflammation of esophagus and inflammation of kidney. Not only knowing the name of diseases, you need to know the etiologies, predisposing factors, complications, and treatments. Next, you will learn qbout adaptation of cells, tumors (benign and malignant) and some related disease regarding the secretion of hormone inside the body.
